Taking a Placement Test at Central

The Seattle Central Community College Testing Center subscribes to the mission and standards outlined by the National College Testing Association (NCTA), and is dedicated to providing quality assessment and testing services to the college community. These services include:

  • Comprehensive testing for initial student placement into reading, writing, and math classes
  • Providing a proctored testing environment for Central's Correspondence and Distance Learning students
  • Providing a proctored testing environment for correspondence students of other institutions>
  • Administering the General Educational Development (GED) Test both on-campus and in local correctional institutions.


Where is the Testing Center

The Testing Office is now located in its newly renovated, permanent space, in the main campus building, Broadway-Edison (BE), Room 1106. Please enter the main building from the main entrance on Broadway Ave and turn right onto the main college hallway. The Testing Office is the first office on the right, across from the C-Store. Is There a Fee for the Test?

The fee is $18.00.

What Do I Need to Take the Test?

  • Photo I.D. must be presented before testing, or picking up scores.
  • You must apply to Seattle Central Community College.
  • Apply online via the Web Admissions Center. It’s simple, fast and free!
  • If not applying online, come to the Admissions/Registration Office on campus for great in-person attention.
  • Please come to the Testing Office first for a payment slip to take to the Cashier. Cash, check, or cards are accepted until 4pm on weekdays. After 4pm or on weekends, exact change cash or check only (made out to SCCC).
  • Dictionaries are not allowed (except for Math Tests if English is not your first language.)
  • There is a standard MS Windows calculator built into the math program for you to use, with both basic and scientific functions. If it is not a graphing calculator you may also bring your own if you wish. Sharing calculators is not allowed.
  • Pencils and scratch paper are provided.
  • Babies and small children are not allowed in the testing room. If they are left in the lobby they must have supervision.
  • Pagers, cell phones, & personal stereos must be turned off. No personal headphones.

Seattle Central Community College Testing Center

Appointments are not made for COMPASS. Walk in at any time during these hours, except the last 45-minutes before closing. 

     Monday - 8am to 7:30pm (must arrive by 6:45pm)

     Tuesday - 1pm to 7:30pm (must arrive by 6:45pm)

     Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - 8am to 4:30pm(must arrive by 3:45pm)

 

No tests will be started during the last 45 minutes.

Weekend Testing is not available.

You will need to know your Student ID Number (not your Social Security #) from Admissions to take COMPASS. (Running Start students should visit the Running Start Office.)

There are 16 COMPASS stations: first come, first served.  The busiest period of time is between 12 noon and 3pm.

Photo ID is required for all services.

Public Transit

At least 11 different bus routes serve the college. For assistance charting your route to Seattle Central, go to the Metro Transit website to tailor your door-to-door trip.

Students enrolled in 10 or more regular college credits per quarter are eligible to purchase a discounted transit pass called the ORCA Card. The ORCA Card is valid on Metro and Sound Transit buses, Pierce, Kitsap, Everett, and Community Transit systems, as well as other commuter options, including the Sounder Train and the Link Light Rail. Students may purchase the ORCA Card at the cashier’s office on campus.

From Downtown Seattle

Our campus is a 15-minute walk—or a short bus ride—from the downtown core.

Washington State Ferries

If you’re coming from Vashon, Bremerton or Bainbridge Island, the Seattle and Fauntleroy ferry terminals offer convenient nearby transit connections to the Seattle Central campus.

By Car

FROM Interstate 5 Northbound

Take Olive Way/Denny Way Exit 166 (under the Washington State Convention and Trade Center) and follow Olive Way east to Denny Way and turn right. Go up the hill and turn right on Broadway. Follow Broadway south to Pine, turn right, and go one block west to the Parking Garage located at Harvard and Pine.

FROM Interstate 5 Southbound

Follow the Madison Street/Convention Center exit (#165), making a right hand turn onto Madison. Get into the left lane and turn left at Boren. Follow Boren north until Pine Street, and turn right at Pine going east. Follow Pine Street east until Harvard Ave. Turn left onto Harvard, then make an immediate left turn into the Harvard Ave. parking garage.
